How to apply false lashes (for beginners!) - The Small Things Blog (2)
I’m not a regular false lash wearer, but I’ve found that it’s nice to know how to apply them if you ever need or want to wear them!

There is a huge range of options for false lashes, from super dramatic to very natural. I tend to choose the natural looking lashes because I don’t like a dramatic look nor do I like the weight of thicker false lashes.

In the video I’m using very natural looking lashes, but the technique would be the exact same if you were using a thicker or more dramatic lash. You simply may need to hold the lash on the lid a bit longer to make sure the glue sticks since it may weigh a bit more.

Tools you need:

false lashes (these are my favorites)

lash glue (this is the best I’ve used!)

scissors, tweezers, perhaps a q-tip

I like to apply one thin coat of mascara to my lashes before applying the false lash. I find that this helps the lashes look more “realistic” from the side view. You’ll see in the video that I also like to apply mascara to the false lashes after the glue has set as well. It keeps them from looking so obvious, I’ve found.

Practice makes perfect, so don’t save your first attempt at applying the lash for the night of a big event. Try it a few times beforehand so you can really get a feel of where the lash needs to be set on the lid.

To remove the lashes, I simply wash my face with my typical cleaner, applying plenty of warm water to my eye area. The water is usually enough to soften up the glue and allow the lashes to simply fall off (I save them and reuse them), but sometimes I need to pull them off slightly. It never feels harsh or damaging on my eyes because the water does so much of the work initially.

I used to be SUPER into falsies when I was in high school. Japanese “gyaru” makeup was all the rage in Hong Kong back in the day! They’re so hard to apply though and I applaud you for the tutorial! I’ve officially given up on false lashes now, though! 😉

Thank you for this!! I heard you mention eyeliner but Do you curl your own lashes and apply any mascara to them before applying the false lashes?

any tips for cleaning and storing false lashes after wear?

Reply

Kate says · 02.08.18

I’d clean with makeup remover and then reshape to dry in the container then arrived in.

Thank you! I struggle with the glue so I’ll try this brand.

Can you also let us know what products you are wearing for makeup in this post?

Thank you!

I have worn this brand with relative success, but as you say, it needs a bit of practice. I did leave a set out on the bathroom counter and whilst momentarily distracted, my cat thought they were great to play with 😳

Thanks Kate! How many times can you reuse the false lashes? And echoing another question, do you find it necessary to curl your natural lashes first to blend in with the false lashes?

Reply

Kate says · 02.08.18

my lashes basically don’t respond to a lash curler so there’s almost no point for me to do that, but if yours will curl a bit with the lash curler, definitely do that first!

Hi Kate,
Great video, I’ll add a few more tips that might help your followers/readers. I lost all my lashes 15 years ago to an autoimmune disease – Alopecia, so I apply lashes daily. Biggest helpful tip, let the glue dry for approx. 30 secs before applying to lash line. The “tackiness” helps them adhere better. Also if you don’t want to use mascara you can curl the fake lashes with a lash curler after you’ve applied them, but wait about 5 mins, or you can actually pull them off. I find that after you apply the lashes take a liquid eyeliner and just go over the lash line area to help blend them in. Finally, I’ve tried so many glue brands and this one is so good! https://esqido.com/products/companion-eyelash-glue
It’s a little more expensive but worth the investment if you wear them weekly. Cheers!

I wear false lashes regularly when I’m on stage and wanted to say ditto, Sandy, about the waiting 30 sec for tackiness. I use/love Eyelure brand and they usually come with a little plastic “clamp” to help hold the lashes while you put on the glue & apply them. This Eyelure do-hickey is the bomb (other brands’ tools haven’t been as useful).

I’ve tried it before and failed. But you make it sound easy with these tips. Guess it’s worth trying again.

I have so many questions!!!

-Are lashes reusable? I’ve always been one use and done, mainly because they’ve been for special events. Does it make a difference if you’ve put mascara on them?
-What about drugstore brand lashes? Are they one time use?
-You mentioned lash-loss. Was this from getting them tinted? I’ve been considering that as an alternative.

Kate says · 02.08.18

I think my lash loss was unrelated to the lash lift or tint; I reuse drugstore brand lashes; When I apply mascara to the lashes, it simply washes off when I wash my face. I try to reshape them when they are wet and let them dry before storing them away in the same container they came in. I can usually get 3 uses out of a drugstore lash!

You made it look so easy! I think applying the glue is the hardest part for me, and I also didn’t know I should be putting them on the skin, rather than the base of the lashes. Good to know! I rarely wear them (I wore them on my wedding), but it might be fun to don them once a week or something!

I really like both, one of them is a bit longer but I find that they are both very natural looking

I recently bought natural lashes and loved them. I also curled a little after application and set. I also applied mascara. You said you reuse them. Well I washed mine and attended to reshape on my counter and they looked like dead spiders so out they went. Any ideas ? I love your videos, thank you for the blow dry tips use it all the time now.
